February 17: On a Related Note

Media that mattered to me this week.

Washington Post: Why white parents need to celebrate Black History Month as a teachable moment.

Podcast: Best of Both Worlds talks friendship with kids and a job.

Podcast: Call Your Girlfriend discusses how to move well, from new friends to getting your bearings.

Podcast: Patriarchy Podcast has an expert on to explain how to smash the patriarchy.

New York Times: Black With (Some) White Privilege.

Thinking Person’s Guide to Autism: Important article about what the neurodiversity movement is all about–an answer to the top straw man argument you hear from autism parents.

Mama Pineapple talks about it is like for an autistic when (s)he has a meltdown. While she is clear that her experience is just her experience, it’s important to share nonetheless.

Podcast: Stuff Mom Never Told You asks can marriage be feminist?

Daily Kos: Susan Collins “shocked” that Republicans reneged on their promise to her. And she’s the only person surprised at an utterly predictable outcome.

Daily Kos: Arizona legislators denying women prisoners sufficient pads and tampons and then punishing them for bleeding on uniforms. This is enough to make your head explode.

Book: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. Le Guin recently passed and a few days prior I downloaded this book at the recommendation of a friend. It’s an incredible book. This part in particular feels like my everyday life:

The behavior of people in Karhide is dictated by shifgrethor, an intricate set of unspoken social rules and formal courtesy. Ai does not understand this system, thus making it difficult for him to understand Estraven’s motives, and contributing to his distrust of Estraven.

Neurodivergent Rebel: The problem with autism.
